Apple Tree's Week at a Glance
Weekly Theme: Apples!

Dates: October 19-23
Monday & Tuesday: Busy start to our apple week!

Literacy/Emergent Reading:
We read a few apple books. The kids enjoyed relating the books to their experiences
at the orchards last week. One of the books had great pictures of the apple tree in
different seasons. The kids were surprised to see flowers on the Spring apple tree. I
have several other apple books to share with the children this week.

The children were able to share their ideas for our apple
"knowledge tree." Each child added an apple to our tree,
telling us what they know about apples. We will be
adding to our knowledge tree as we learn more about
                        apples.

Art/Fine Motor:
We colored pictures of 6 different apple foods and glued them to a sheet of paper.
The children shared with their friends what their favorite apple food is.

We used real apples to create apple prints using red, yellow and green paint. The
children were surprised to see the apple has a star shape when cut sideways.

Each child practiced drawing circles in creating their own drawing of an apple.

Math Skills:
The kids were given a graph with apples each programmed with a different number.
They were then given an ink pad and pencil eraser. The kids placed dots on the
apple to correspond with the number shown.

Wednesday

Cooking:
Today we had fun with a little cooking activity.
We made applesauce! The kids helped in
preparing the apples and everyone had a turn
to add cinnamon and sugar. Yummy! During our
project we reviewed the names of the apple
parts. Notice their tongues in the second picture, so cute! We obviously didn't miss
putting sugar on the apples. We are all excited to try our creation at snack today!

Prepositional Concepts:

We used our flannel board to
practice these concepts today.
The kids placed a worm next to, below, behind, on top of, etc the apple. We spent
the rest of our rainy morning making play doh creations and dancing to some
Halloween tunes.

Thursday

We spent most of the morning involved in fall related activities. We completed
several file folder games & a few helped me match "candy corn letters," we matched
the upper case to the lower case. Not sure what a file folder game is? Ask us, we'd
be happy to share. The kids were all very busy with the "new" train table. So nice to
hide things for a while and bring that back out "new again." We also went on a walk
to Gideon Pond to pick up ******* from kindergarten. On the way back the kids helped
find different kinds of leaves. When we returned we used the leaves to make
beautiful leaf rubbing pictures. This is a great activity for home if you're trying to
come up with something quick and easy.

Enrichment Programs:
The kids are getting more and more into
our theater class. Please let me know
which performance time you prefer, in the
morning at normal class time or at pick
up time. Performance is November 9th.
Our story teller brought fun Halloween
activities to expand our emergent reading
skills!
Your child learned about their "ticker"

Bookmobile afterward
Try This!
Point out different kinds of apples and
share the name of them with your child
next time you visit the grocery store.
Count the apples together as you place
them in your bag. Weigh the apples.
Looking Ahead:
Next week, pumpkin theme! The kids
should wear their Halloween costume
Tuesday and Friday. Field trip on
Tuesday.
Parent/Provider training November 2nd.
Will you be joining us?
Reminder:
It is important that kids come to daycare
with a coat, gloves and hat every day. We
can be outside sometimes as long as
45min. to an hour and we have had days
where 40 is the high. Boots are optional
at this point but it is muddy now. We
would rather have the option of warmer
gear than not have it available.
Do you have something you
would like to share with the
other parents? Let us know!
We are learning this fingerplay:

Way up high in the apple tree
(point up)
Two little apples smiled at me.
(form circles with hands & smile)
I shook that tree as hard as I could.
(pretend to shake tree)
Down came those apples...
Mmmmm, how good.
